Typography Exercise Two

Exercise two was very fun to work on. For this we had to morph letters and objects together. We started off by making our letters hand drawn then we had to illustrate object to go with them. For my objects I decided to make cats and morph those with the letters A S and H. I had a lot of fun with this exercise, but looking at it in such a small form I notice that it does need a lot more contrast to be readable. It was also difficult for me because I was working in Photoshop and I usually stick to using illustrator a lot so there were small changes involved in this exercise.

Typography Exercise One

For exercise one we had to design our own “field notes” book. This little booklet was filled with different forms of typography that we each saw in the world around us. My favorite one that I saw was “Crank” which was on the book that I was reading at the time of this. The font itself helped emphasis what the book was about and how important it was. It was what originally drew me to the book. Another font choice that I love is the “Wonderful Pistachio” which most people will recognize as seeing in their local grocery store. The color choice on the dark background is truly beautiful to me. I do wish that I did my cover in marker instead because, as the semester went on, the pencil on the cover got smudged.

Typography Handgloves

Throughout the course during the semester we were given specific fonts of the day and ten of them we had to reproduce in the words of “handgloves”. This was a very interesting task, at the start of the year. I felt as it went on that it got harder to copy the fonts exactly and that sometimes it got a little frustrating and boring. My favorite handgloves that I did are the Blackletter and the Uncial. I liked the flow and curves that both fonts had in them. I did struggle with some of the fonts, but in the end they ended up looking very close to how they were supposed to look.

Typography Project Four

Project four was very fun and gave me a chance to be more creative. We were each assigned a type that we had to create a poster based on. I got assigned with Blackletter, which I loved designing a poster for. I wanted the poster to be interesting so I made the alphabet into the boarder on the poster. I also wanted to keep an older look to my poster because Blackletter is such an old type. I feel like I achieved what I wanted to in the design of this poster. The only thing I struggled with was finding information about Blackletter because it is so old. I could not find an exact creator, I only knew that Guttenburg used it in his printings of the 42 Line Bible.

Typography Project Three

My third project for typography was my favorite. The goal was to design a geometric black letter font. I thought I was very successful with this project as well as the exercise that I had to display it on three snowboards. I think the best part about displaying it on the snowboards was that it did not have to be readable, it just had to be an interesting design. I struggled with adding color to my font because I enjoyed it better in a simple black and white design, but finally I came up with the contrasting purple and yellow colors. Looking at it now I wish the yellow I picked was a little bit calmer as it is almost too bright on the purple background.

Typography Project Two

For project two we had to define typography. For this project we needed to explore with color compositions at least three times before we came up with our designs. I enjoyed working on this project because it helped me learned and remember different important aspects in typography. My favorite part was at the end when I put all nine pieces together and got to seem them as a whole. One thing that was challenging was trying to figure out how I wanted to display the different facts on a poster and which facts I wanted to put on my poster. I almost like my color compositions that I did to start off better than the compositions I made with the text.

Typography Project One

Project One

For project one in Typography we were each assigned a theme that we had to design five letters as drop caps for. My theme that I was assigned was New York City. The letters I decided to use were A, E, I, W, and N. I had a lot of fun working on this project because I loved putting parts of the city into the lettering, like skyscrapers as well as bridges. Looking at the project now, later in the semester, I wish I put more work into the letter I as well as the letter E. I still enjoy them and how well they flow with the other letters, but I could have made the letters more readable.
